Other ways to get support

  • Talk to someone you trust

A friend, a family member, a pastor or imam, a colleague. You do not need to explain everything. Start with "I have not been feeling like myself."

  • See a health professional

Go to your nearest clinic or hospital and say you want to speak to someone about your mental health. They can refer you to a psychologist, psychiatrist or mental health nurse.

  • Public psychiatric hospitals

Ghana has public psychiatric hospitals in Accra, Pantang and Ankaful. Many regional hospitals also have mental health nurses and clinics. Call ahead to ask about services and cost.

  • Report abuse or violence

DOVVSU, the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit of the Ghana Police Service, supports victims of abuse, including men. Call 055 100 0900 or visit any police station.

Worried about someone else?

  • Ask directly, calmly and privately, how they are really doing.
  • Listen without trying to fix or judge. Let them talk.
  • Ask whether they have thought about ending their life. Asking does not put the idea in their head.
  • Stay with them, and help them call a helpline or get to a hospital if they are at risk.
  • Keep checking in afterwards.
